Where the Firefly network goes next

By Barrington Kirkham,

More than 170 titles across three countries. Here is what we are building toward, and what we are deliberately not doing.

The network now covers more than 170 local titles across the UK, Poland and Ireland. That number is less interesting than what we do with it, so here is the direction.

Deeper before wider

It is easy to add titles and hard to make them good. The next stretch is about depth: more local contributors, better coverage in the towns we already publish in, and titles that read like someone lives there. A thin title in a new city is worth less than a strong one in an existing one.

Making it easier to contribute

Most people with a genuinely good local story never send it anywhere, because the route is unclear. Shortening that path is the single highest-leverage thing we can do, and most of our product work points at it.

Polish-language editions, and more languages after that

Poland showed that the model travels when the editorial judgement is genuinely local. Those titles publish in English today; Polish-language editions are the next piece of work, and the bar for anywhere we go after that is the same: local editors, in the local language, or we do not launch.

What we are not doing

Not selling links. Not chasing engagement through outrage. Not filling titles with content nobody asked for to hit a publishing quota. Those are all faster routes to bigger numbers, and all of them end with a title people stop trusting.

If you want to be part of it, send us a story or get in touch.
