Local advertising is not a smaller version of national advertising

By Barrington Kirkham,

The metrics that matter in a town of forty thousand are not the metrics an agency dashboard is built to show.

Local advertising gets judged with borrowed tools. Impressions, reach, cost per thousand. All of it built for campaigns where the audience is a demographic rather than a place.

In a town, the numbers are smaller and the effects are bigger. Five hundred people seeing something in a title they trust is not a worse version of fifty thousand strangers seeing a banner. It is a different thing entirely.

What actually moves

Recognition, mostly. People walking in and saying they read about it. Staff applications from people who now know you exist. A charity partner getting in touch. None of that shows up cleanly in a dashboard, which is why local advertising is chronically undervalued by people looking at the wrong panel.

The trap

The trap is optimising a local campaign for national metrics, which pushes you toward volume and away from the thing that works locally: being genuinely known in one place.

What we would suggest

Pick fewer places and show up in them properly. Sustained presence in the title that covers your town beats scattered impressions across a region you do not serve. If you want to talk it through, start here.
